Mother's Day

Thoughtful and Fun Mother’s Day Ideas: Via the Love Lumi Team

Psst! Mother’s Day (Sunday, 19 March) is mere weeks away!
To help you plan the perfect day with your Mum, Stepmum, Mother-in-Law (or that special person in your life who’s like a Mum to you), we’re bringing you a sprinkling of inspiration. Read on, then, for some thoughtful and fun Mothering Sunday ideas from the Love Lumi team…
Prepare an At-Home Afternoon Tea
It’s lovely to get dressed up and go out, but if the pandemic taught us anything it’s that it doesn’t matter where you are when you’re spending time with those closest to you.
Prepare an at-home high tea and you won’t have a time limit on how long you spend at your table. Neither will you have to get out of your Sunday comfies, if you’d rather not.
‘Homemade’ to you might mean rustling up your own sandwiches and buying a few sweet treats from M&S. Or it could mean preparing the whole afternoon tea from scratch – Mary Berry, eat your heart out. Speaking of Mary Berry, we love the Queen of Baking’s recipe for Victoria sandwich. Light, fluffy and extremely easy to make, it serves 12 – or two (if you have six pieces each). We jest, of course, but well…it’s only Mother’s Day once a year, eh?
Create a Memory Book
Do you have a photo box that’s brimming with photos of you and your Mum that you’ve not yet had chance to frame? Or perhaps you have plenty of pictures of Mother’s Days gone by? If so, why not create a memory book featuring pictures or other keepsakes – tickets, souvenirs from family holidays and anything else you can think of that will raise a smile.
The best gifts tend to be the most thoughtful – and a present like this needn’t cost the earth. Use an old photo album or buy a simple scrapbook. If you prefer, upload your photos digitally to one of the many photobook apps or websites and create your masterpiece that way.
Share a Hobby
Does your Mum or Mother-in-Law love nothing more than tending to her prized flowerbeds? Perhaps she’s waxed lyrical for years about her hobby, in the hope of converting you to the joys of growing-your-own or nurturing flower show-worthy roses.
You may not be remotely green-fingered, which is why offering up your time to help in the garden  – to your Mum, Grandma or another constant in your life – will be even more appreciated. You could create a fun voucher for a couple of hours of your time, spent putting the world to rights over an alfresco cuppa while digging up the weeds – or indeed doing whatever else she loves getting stuck into when she has the time.
Again, you don’t have to spend a lot – or anything, for that matter – to show your Mum you care.
Plan a Family Quiz
You thought we’d left quizzes in lockdown, didn’t you? Well, here’s another idea that won’t break the bank – a fun family quiz (in-person or online) that you can enjoy after your Mother’s Day roast.
Put together a set of questions centered around your Mum and the memories you’ve all shared as a family. You could create a picture round featuring old photos (participants must guess where the pictures were taken, for example), or a round full of quotes (when did mum utter this absolute belter of a catchphrase?). Have fun with it and we guarantee everyone will be howling with laughter.
